Harvard College was named for its first benefactor, John Harvard of Charlestown, a young minister who, upon his death in 1638, left half his estate to a new institution established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Like the crisscrossing paths of its famous Yard, Harvard touches history at virtually every turn. One of the most rewarding routes through Harvard's past is also one of the easiest: touring its buildings and open spaces, which echo to tales as old as Colonial America.
